Victor Hugo Vineyards and Winery is a small, family owned and operated winery, specializing in small, hand-crafted lots of wine that exhibit intense colors and flavors. The winery is dedicated to producing elegant, rich wines that demonstrate excellent longevity, based on their meticulous vineyard practices. Graduating from U.C. Davis in 1979, Victor Hugo Roberts spent a few years working for a small winery in Paso Robles. By 1985, Vic and his wife Leslie planted 15 acres of vineyards in Templeton. That acreage has increased over the years to be 78 acres, which is planted to Petite Sirah, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Syrah, Viognier, and the five Bordeaux reds. The winery is located in a picturesque, recently renovated 100-year old redwood barn, where they produce their superlative wines.

Planted on the rugged, shaly hillside of the property, the vineyard receives meticulous care. This includes vertical shoot positioning, shoot and cluster thinning, and leaf pulling. The vines are grafted on four different root stocks (phylloxera and nematode resistant), and are specifically selected for drought tolerance, allowing for the use of mild deficit irrigation in order to concentrate flavors and further improve grape quality.
