Today current plantings of petite sirah beat out syrah in Napa County. Petite sirah has 832 acres in the region, and is the eighth most planted grape here. Syrah follows in ninth place with 787 acres. The Napa Valley Vintner and St. Helena Star Tasting Panel recently reviewed 18 wines made from these varietals at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St. Helena. Panelists included local winemakers, retailers, restaurateurs and others in the local wine trade. Two flights of syrah from the 2012 and 2013 vintages, a flight of petite sirah and a flight of red blends were tasted and assessed.

2013 Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard from Calistoga plays it slightly closer to the vest. It displays slightly more tannin and structure, blue and black fruits, some earth, spice, and a nice, rich finish. It is another outstanding effort from this winery, which does great work with these varietals. Drink it over the next decade.

Like Blueberry Syrup Bomb or Tyrannosaurus Red. Or Official Wine of Millennial American Males. There is nothing tiny about petite sirah, a French grape now almost exclusively associated with California, where it thrives under the sun like a bodybuilder on Muscle Beach.

First up, petite sirah - a very robust red grape known as "durif' in Australia and France. Nothing is petite about petite sirah. It is very tannic, dark, acidic, a serious powerhouse wine, especially when made in California. No matter what you ate earlier, petite sirah will trump those flavors and start a whole new round of palate pleasures.

Petite has a loyal following, including a fan club called PS I Love You, as well as talented California winemakers dedicated to showing the grape's potential...Despite the myriad difficulties it faces, Petite Sirah is on the rise in California, both in terms of plantings and number of producers. Acreage for the grape has had its ups and downs over the years, reaching its heyday during the 1970s before plummeting to its lowest point of about 1,750 acres statewide in 1995. These days, almost 10,000 acres are planted to the variety, which is great news for fans of big, rich, hearty wines.

There are a few red wine grapes out there that are confusingly named "petit" or "petite,' but dont allow their little-bitty names to fool you. The grapes may be little but the resultant wine is anything but. Calling wine made from petite sirah, petit verdot, or petit rouge a "petite' little wine would be like referring to Danny De Vito as petite. Sure he's smaller in stature but he's huge on personality and bombast, which is pretty much how these red grapes perform in a glass.

Michael Dresser: For years, the rap on petite sirah had been that it was a low-class, no-account, unsophisticated grape even more southern (south of France, that is) than its distant relation, the noble syrah, which produces such widely adored wines as Hermitage and Cote Rotie. The assumption at the time was that the true syrah would inevitably nudge aside the remaining petite sirah vines. And in fact, many acres of venerable petite sirah vines had been uprooted to make way for more fashionable varieties on younger vines that would produce more tons of grapes. It's a shame, because petite sirah is a grape with its own distinctive character.

So wine would never do. Right? If one of Dirt's bros were to pull out a bottle of Petite Sirah, that dude might actually be banned from future rides. But what if, Dirt considered, his bro paired that Petite Sirah with a nice goat cheese and endive salad? Interesting... To be sure, I'm a bonafide beer-drinking mountain biker. But I love good wine, and I love good food. I'm no Mary Brown Malouf, but I know the good stuff when it enters my mouth. Why can't one experience these in one connected affair?

This was our fifth consecutive year attending Dark & Delicious. It's one of our favorites events because it offers a great combination of Petite Sirah, a wine we love, and food. In terms of the wine, this was the best year ever in my book. There were a couple of new to me wineries that were among my favorites, including Mineral and Overland. Add to the newbies perennial favorites like Carol Shelton and Dashe Cellars (which where new to Dark and Delicious for 2015) along with perennial favorites David Fulton, Robert Biale and Ridge Vineyards, and you got a winning combination!

While I am so tempted to jump in my car and drive up there, I can't make it up north this year (I've got a fundraiser for my son's music program to go to that night!). I do know from my attendance a few years ago that you'll find nearly 60 important California wineries and often their winemakers pouring their Petites, including very rare, older vintages, verticals, barrel samples, and more. These wineries are joined by fine food restaurants, specialty food producers, and caterers; you can bet on both the food and wine to be dark and delicious!
